The international conference The space of languages: the Portuguese language in the early modern world (15th-17th centuries) will take place from 17th to 19th february at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (check the website of CHAM Centro de História d’Aquém e d’Além-Mar, co-organizer of the conference, for more information and the full programme).
«Both the Congress and Project “The space of languages” aim at studying the roots of the diffusion, forms and contexts of use of the Portuguese language as well as of Portuguese-based pidgins and creoles in the early modern period»: UvA-associate professor Otto Zwartjes will give a lecture on the «Portuguese missionary dictionaries in Asia, Africa and Brazil (1550-1800): Lexicography as a mirror of cultures?».
